If I want something extra, some more expressive EQ or compression, then I use other stuff. It's hard to fail when you're recording with that kind of stuff. The main room at Gula, the Mothership, is built around a Neve 8014 with 16 x 1066 modules. So it's more about trying to find some working model of how to capture it." But with a band like Franz Ferdinand, they come to the studio with the songs and they can play them and they have their sound. "Working with the Cardigans had been different because they're very much a studio band, so they come in without having played the songs at all and develop their music in the studio. But I didn't realise that until we started to mix and I had to mute quite a few tracks because it felt overproduced. "My first feeling was 'I have to make sure that I don't overproduce this.' But I did! It took some time and actually it took some help from them to get into thinking indie again, to get thinking that the important thing is to get this band sounding right as a band and not to go wild in the studio and start recording a lot of vibraphones and backing vocals and things. The album is just kind of a luxury version of that. "The demos had been recorded very simply in rehearsal rooms and kitchens," Johansson explains, "so they were very rough, but they worked well. The producer was first sent the Franz Ferdinand demos in the spring of 2003 and says he was immediately impressed by the artful energy of the songs, no matter how makeshift the actual recordings were. "When you go into studios for whole albums, 30 or 40 days," he points out, "natural light is so important. More than anything else, the producer credits this working environment for helping him to regain his enthusiasm for studio recording. Gula - Swedish for 'yellow' - is bright and airy with plenty of natural light. On his return to Malmo, Johansson began working in a new sister facility of Tambourine, Gula Studion, which had been recently built in an old printing factory. I had no idea how many people were sitting out there with Pro Tools doing fantastic demos of fantastic songs with fantastic singers." But then when I came to England and started to write, I hadn't realised that the competition was so tough. "I was actually fed up of working in studios with bands. But despite moderate successes with Mel C and Sophie-Ellis Bextor, he says he didn't much enjoy the experience. Johansson then relocated to England for a year, writing and producing pop tracks on a Pro Tools setup from his home in Sussex. So my first five years actually working as a producer, that was very much developing and growing up together with the Cardigans." Natural Light, Natural Sound Every time we started on a new album, we sat down and listened to the old album and we decided what we liked about it and what we didn't like about it and what direction the new album should go in. "When we started out, I was very inexperienced and we kind of grew up together. Most of these albums were recorded at his now-defunct Tambourine studio in Malmo, and Johansson admits that having to negotiate the group's stylistic diversions down the years really helped to expand his repertoire as a producer. In other ways, of course, Johansson was the perfect man for the job, having guided the Cardigans through five albums, from the jangling guitars of 1996's First Band On The Moon, through the pristine electronic pop of Gran Turismo in 2002 to the polished country-rock of last year's Long Gone Before Daylight. Normally I reach for '60s and '70s records when I'm in the studio, so it was a change to bring out those old synthesizers instead of the Hammond organ."įranz Ferdinand, taking more than their musical influences from the early '80s. "But I thought that was what was fresh about Franz Ferdinand, the fact that they made reference to these early '80s records. "I didn't get into the post-punk stuff at the time," he says. He admits to having only a sketchy knowledge of the scratchy early-'80s guitar bands like Orange Juice and Josef K that the group list as their main influences. But when Malmo-based producer Tore Johansson was first approached to work with the Scottish quartet, he might have easily been forgiven for thinking their record company had the wrong man. With UK sales of 300,000 and rising, Franz Ferdinand's debut album is the surprise indie-to-mainstream hit of the year, thanks in no small part to their angular guitar-funk single 'Take Me Out' making the top 10 back in February. Cardigans producer Tore Johansson was thrown into unfamiliar musical territory when asked to produce the debut album by Scottish guitar band Franz Ferdinand, but the result was a commercial and artistic triumph. Navier is already working on filling orders, with first deliveries scheduled for later this year. Well, for one thing, they might have to wait until more of these boats are built. We can make jobs out of this, build an economy around it. “We are actively looking for the right dock to locate an electric water taxi service we’re engaging with the Navier team, we’ve tested their vessel, and when the idea for a pilot came up, we said, we want to be first! We’re also interested in partnering to provide the service and maintenance, to make conversion kits. “But we’re really interested in electrifying all modalities,” Kellman said. Various Bay Area institutions are moving to electric as technologies and budgets permit the Alcatraz ferry, for instance, is undergoing electrification. We’re working on coastal resilience and sea level rise, but my next two years are all about the blue economy, and catalyzing new efforts at electrification.” “This makes a ton of sense for us on a number of different levels,” she told TechCrunch. Sausalito city council member (and not long ago, mayor) Janelle Kellman agreed: “For Bayfront communities like Alameda with busy residents commuting all over the Bay Area, the electric hydrofoil water shuttle provides an enjoyable, pleasant, fast, environmentally superior alternative to driving on our increasingly congested freeways and bridges.” “I think the Navier electric hydrofoil shuttle is the water transit vehicle of the future: smooth as silk, super quiet, fast, no smelly exhaust, and no wake,” said Alameda county’s planning director, Andrew Thomas. Potential customers are already eyeing the vessels: No wake means less interference with competing boats, of course, and with the docks and beaches where spectators are waiting. Some people might even take it just to avoid getting stuck in traffic. Having a fast mover or two in addition to your big ferries is a smart move, since there’s inevitably someone who missed their boat and doesn’t want to wait, is willing to pay a little extra to be dropped off a little down the way or has a regular commute that’s awkward on the existing options. More importantly, it could be something that city governments and the marine industry care about. (The hydrofoiling aspect makes it less suitable for certain applications like very shallow water or shipping, but this is obvious to boat people - you don’t tell someone their EV is going to have a hard time doing long-haul trucking.) Being a hydrofoiling boat, the N30 has no wake and rides even choppy waters, so it’s not just a comfy trip but won’t flip kayakers it passes at speed.Īnd of course it’s quiet and doesn’t dump a bunch of oil and carbon into the air and water - increasingly things people care about. And the boat will also soon incorporate autonomous docking, making the most touchy part of the journey simpler. (The 75 nautical-mile range is more than plenty for most coastal runs.)Įssentially a leisure craft reduced to working for a living, the N30 can fit in just about any marina or even small private docks. Navier’s N30 is smaller still (six passengers for this cabin variant, but larger versions to come), but with that comes the benefit of offering point-to-point travel rather than working from a major hub. If this boat is to become more than a novelty, it needs to have a purpose, and the hope is that it can find work as a water taxi serving smaller, more frequent routes.īig ferries hold hundreds of people but need special docks smaller ones less so, but the economics are slightly shaky due to the high cost of fuel and upkeep. The company is in no hurry, though: they’re not just buzzing the marinas and boardwalks to build up hype. Next up are Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe, San Diego, and “the Pacific Northwest,” by which I assume they mean Seattle, jewel of the PNW. To that end, Navier is doing a bit of a road show, on the water of course, and will be visiting a number of major water-adjacent communities, first among them (in visiting order anyhow) San Francisco and its eponymous Bay. The velocity is impressive to say the least - but they need something more than innovation to turn that velocity into momentum. The boat itself, the N30, only existed on paper at the start of 2022, but by the end of last year the company had a full-scale prototype on the water and had taken the wraps off a cabin version at a big boating show now that one is on the water too. Navier has moved impressively quickly from idea to prototype to production boat, and the startup is now touring the West Coast, winning admirers in high places who hope to fit its electric hydrofoiling watercraft into a reinvented marine economy. Electric boats are still a rarity on America’s waterways, but everyone seems to agree they represent a cleaner, quieter future for our lakes, rivers and coastal waters. He had divorced Lisa Marie Presley a few months earlier, and Deborah Rowe, his soon to be second wife, was pregnant with their first son Prince. He had now moved on to perform his first ever concert in Africa as a solo artist, in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Jackson was in the midst of the HIStory World Tour and had already performed concerts in Eastern Europe, Spain and the Netherlands. Our story begins (if you don’t count Jackson’s previous obsessions with young boys) in October 1996. Was Jackson’s relationship with Omer (and you will find out how intimate their relationship was when you read further) a result of arrogance, naïveté or compulsion? Nothing creepy here. And Michael embraced that message.īut had Jackson embraced that message? That is what makes this story fascinating. You’re supposed to be inspiring their parents to prioritize them. You’re not supposed to be building these hospitals and reading them bedtime stories. But I also said to him, you’re not the children’s messiah. Certainly, Jackson’s advisers and lawyers would have made clear that the consequences of entering into a relationship with any child at the same level as the ones he had previously would have been dire.Įven Jackson’s spiritual adviser, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, told Jackson he should not be friends with children.Īfter the 1993 allegations, Michael could no longer work with kids. Like a child bitten by a dog, someone innocently involved with children would have ensured they wouldn’t get into a situation where they may be bitten again. To any observer, it would make sense that a man with the street smarts of Jackson (remembering he had not only survived, but thrived, in the cut throat music business for thirty years), would take great pains to ensure his interactions with children from that point forward were fully accountable and transparent so as to avoid a repeat of the extreme pain that those previous relationships had caused. His health, reputation and fortune were compromised by, if you were to believe him, totally innocent relationships with young boys. He had been accused of child molestation, been forced into a humiliating strip search where his genitals were photographed, and eventually had to pay multi millions of dollars to two families so that they wouldn’t force him into a civil court where they could “tell lies” exposing his alleged sordid behavior with their sons. Here was a man who had, according to his own statements, suffered greatly as a result of his close relationships with boys. Where was he from? How close was he to Jackson? How did they meet? How often, how many times and and for how long did he visit Neverland? I didn’t really know the answers to these questions, so I decided to do some research and find out what I could about Omer and his relationship with Jackson. While I had heard his name in connection with Michael Jackson, I never really knew that much about him. The game also tallies these statistics for the entire team, this reflects the team's score which is primarily based on objectives.Īfter many rounds, the game ends when a set time limit expires, and the team with the most objectives achieved is the winning team regardless of kills or casualties, except in the case where both teams have not achieved any objectives or are tied in the objective score. The reinforcement timer is usually between 10-20 seconds, but this time may vary from server to server. The reinforcements originate at spawn and can be composed of anywhere from 1 soldier to the entire team. Player casualties become reinforcements which are supplied according to a timer. If you take Sorcerer, buy the Summon Ally power, and then take Summoner, you will have 2 Summon Ally powers, one provided by Summoner and other by Sorcerer. So Master Summoner only apply to Summoner powers, and OverPower only apply to Sorcerer powers. First, Arcane Background's Edges and abilities only apply to powers provided by the same AB. Master Summoning in any moment says the power need to cost at least 1 PP to increase it duration.ģ, 4 and 5 - The way you format your question are a bit confusing, so I will answer all of them in one answer. So Master Summoner can't reduce a power PP cost to 0, but doesn't mean you can't reduce it to 0 by other means.ġ - Yes, you can Short the power after the effect of Master SummonerĢ - It doesn't need. if a effect says it reduce something to a minimum of X, it just means this effect in special can't reduce the thing under X. Is the Power cost reduced? Duration extended? Can the caster also use Overpower on the arcane check?Īpply the rules separately. Question 6: What class abilities would be available if the caster learned Summon Animal after they took the second Arcane Background. Question 5: And conversely if the Sorcerer was casting the Summon Ally Power the cost would not be reduced, the duration would not be extended but the arcane check could be Overpowered? Question 4: If the caster used the Summon Ally power would they have to decide which arcane class was casting that Power? So if the Summoner was casting it the 2 point reduction and duration extension would be in effect, but the caster could not Overpower the casting roll like the Sorcerer casting the Power could. If the Sorcerer had the Summon Ally Power already, and then took Summoner the Summoner gets the Summon Ally Power as well as one of their starting Powers Question 3: If a Sorcerer takes Multiple Arcane Backgrounds and double classes as a Summoner what class abilities affect their powers? Question 2: Is this allowed or does the Power have to cost 1 point minimum to have the extended duration effect kick in for the Summoner? I'm not sure if the 1 point minimum negates the option of Shorting a Power down to 0 points. If the caster then decided to Short that power by 1 point they could Summon the creature for 0 points? (Risking a critical failure on a failed roll) pg 97 Question 1: Summoner casts Summon Monster and summons a Crocotta which costs 3 Points (price list for Summoning on pg 132) The Summoner ability would reduce that cost to 1 point. Does this minimum of 1 apply to Shorting a Power? The FC 1.3 Summoner ability of Master Summoner pg 92 reduces the cost of a Summoning by 2 points (to a minimum of 1) and the duration is measured in minutes. |
